“When my husband booked a sailing trip for us with Joe in the Bahamas, I had a limited concept of how amazing the adventure would be! Some highlights were the unparalleled star gazing, exhilaration of crashing waves when passing through a cut and seeing the many shades of blue sea. I enjoyed the responsibilities of a crew member including cooking, cleaning, navigation, being at the helm, even taking solo watch during our two-day crossing. Knowing Joe was right there to answer questions, problem solve or share a great cocktail recipe allowed us to lean on his expertise while “trying on” cruising life for a week. In addition to the hours of blue water sailing, my days were filled with swimming, snorkeling, journaling, hiking on remote island trails and fishing. We even dusted off our billiards skills on shore after completing the passage from the Bahamas Bank to West Palm Beach. The adventure now seems like a faraway dream… so we’ll be making plans to go again!”
“La Peregrina the sailboat is gorgeous and well-appointed. None of us wanted for anything while aboard. Captain Joe is thorough in his planning and excellent in his communication. The conditions were great for motoring but unfortunately not so much for sailing...and I didn’t care one bit. The glassy seas allowed us to concentrate on the sea turtles and dolphin pods that otherwise may have gone unnoticed. I truly enjoyed the folks I got a chance to crew with and learned a lot from each. I had the best time, Joe. I look forward to seeing you and La Peregrina as soon as feasible.”
“I really enjoyed sailing aboard La Peregrina with an experienced captain! She’s a great boat. You’re a great captain. I loved the journey, the experience, and everything learned along the way. There were many things that stand out as memorable, but I relish knowing that we sailed across the Gulf Stream and on to the Bahamas! I’ll never look at a map of Florida the same way! Seeing the colors related to the various depths of the sea and being out of sight of land for hours was phenomenal. A really positive experience and one I’d highly recommend for adventurous souls that want to do something very few have. THANKS, and the best to you and La Peregrina!”
“Captain Joe was an amazing host, teacher and sailor. The trip changed my definition of sailing forever. The beauty of cruising to your destination on nothing but wind is amazing. The crossing was challenging but well worth the experience. Thanks Captain! I hope to have another voyage in the future! ”
“The trip was a singular experience for me. In addition to her beautiful lines, La Peregrina at all times felt safe and comfortable. I came to think of her as sentient, as much under her care as she was under ours. People had asked me, ‘Aren’t you afraid to go sailing with a bunch of strangers?’ Imagine my delight now, having gained three delightful new friends who enjoy sailing as much as I do. As our captain, your demeanor was the critical ingredient that allowed us to work easily as a team.Watch-keeping offshore, alone at night, while dolphins play in the phosphorescence churned up by the bow wake is a singular experience. Cooking a hot meal for new friends at sea is a singular experience. Sitting at anchor at sunset is a singular experience, sailing on to anchor (and off again) is a singular experience. Surfing along on a broad reach, in 20 knots of wind, is a singular experience. Arriving in Newport by sea is a singular experience.I wish you all the best and look forward to the next time our paths cross.”
“Thank you Joe! I had a blast. Until this trip, I had only daysailed and had no real reference for what I would see underway. I really enjoyed the whole adventure. I was excited to be on the helm when we pulled up anchor and headed out of the harbor. The auto pilot and chart plotter were super easy to use. The color of the Caribbean sea was amazing. I was comfortable with handling ‘La Peregrina’ right away. The boat was super nice and beautiful; I was glad to be on such a seaworthy vessel. We had more food than we could ever eat and the meals were great. Even going through Border Control and Customs was interesting to learn. I learned a ton about sailing long distances and consider myself lucky to have a great captain. I will be back. ”
“Our trip was one of the best experiences of my life. Offshore sailing is unlike anything I’ve ever done. Our trip was a great introduction to cruising and sailing offshore. Thanks again for everything.”
“As an experienced sailor, with lots of racing and teaching, this was an entirely new experience for me, to sail for days on end so far offshore. I liked how the watch schedule was set up and how you allowed us to choose the shift we wanted. Your safety rules about lifejackets and clip in was excellent, you were able to convey the seriousness of safety, without causing fear or alarm. I am also so very thankful for the auto-pilot, this is a game changer for this type of cruising. The food selection was good and we ate really well on board. Your boat is in tip-top condition with nice amenities, I felt confident and safe in the boat. It is a goal of mine to cruise the Carribean. It was great how we all hit it off! It is so awesome you are doing these adventures.”
“Joe, thanks for leading us on such a great adventure! It was truly epic to sail through the night on the open water under your guidance. Your boat was loaded with plenty of rations to allow us to be creative with our cooking. Nothing about the maintenance of your vessel was remiss and the seaworthiness of La Peregrina was confidence inspiring. I found your leadership style to be extremely easygoing and your decision making process to build trust. You are an amazing guide! It was truly a great experience.”
“One of the most fantastic ‘vacation’ trips I’ve ever had! I learned so much about sailing, cruising, teamwork, cooperation, safety, preparation and smart decisions. Joe and Maribeth Hagan along with their spectacular ‘little’ sailboat La Peregrina made this an adventure I will never forget. They were gracious hosts while waiting out the weather, calm under the most stressful conditions and immensely knowledgeable about the cruising lifestyle! It was everything I hoped it would be and more than I ever imagined it could be! If you or anyone you know wants the experience of a lifetime, I highly recommend you check out the Offshore Adventure Sailing website and start planning yours now!!!!!”
“Thank you for successfully guiding me through my first offshore sailing adventure! I would have been happy to continue to the Bahamas. The sailing was fantastic. I believe we had the boat at hull speed most of the time. The engine was nice when the wind dropped and during the squall. I particularly enjoyed sailing through the night. The stars were impressive and I saw bioluminescence for the first time. You can’t go wrong when you have a nice boat, good wind, good sailors, beautiful sunrises, sunsets, stars and too many dolphins to count.”
“I sailed with Offshore Adventure Sailing from Panama City, FL to Key West, FL in May of 2018. Previous charter trips I have taken had the feeling of bay sailing since the captain was reluctant to stray too far from the coast, this is NOT the case with Joe and OAS. We took as straight of a route as the wind would allow and at our furthest point were roughly 300 miles from the nearest land. We faced decent weather for the 450ish mile trip, and spent a couple nights at great anchorages in the Dry Tortugas. The overall feel of the trip was more like a friends boat instead of a charter vessel. The vast amount of offshore sailing knowledge I gained from Joe boosted my confidence greatly to embark on a similar trip on my own boat. La Peregrina is a robust and well-accommodated vessel; at no point did I have any doubts about her or the captain’s seaworthiness. I highly recommend Offshore Adventure Sailing to anyone looking to gain blue water knowledge or just have a great time offshore sailing.”
“Thank you so much for the adventure from Panama City Beach to Key West via the Dry Tortugas. Wow, what a great place! I can’t say enough about the trip. Captain and three crew were a perfect fit for the trip and for La Peregrina. Having consistent day and night watches with 9 hours off in between made the trip very casual and easy for everyone to get into the groove. La Peregrina is a solid vessel and the 18 to 20 knot breeze we experienced most of the trip seemed to be in her sweet spot. You did an outstanding job with the provisioning. Snacks were plentiful and it was a good variety of crunchy, sweet, salty, and chewy. Thanks again for the trip.”
“Kick ass trip! It only took a few days on land for me to want to hop back on a boat. That trip changed my life for the better. Thank you, man! I made friends, read a book . . . after a while, I gave in to the ebb and flow of the sea and was rewarded with a calm that I now long for. What I enjoyed the most: Seeing the Milky Way for the first time. It was glorious! If I had to liken it to something else, I suppose it’d be a meditation retreat with adventure. I can’t wait to do it again. Thanks for a great trip!”
“My favorite time was when we were hard on the wind with the rail in the water. I kept thinking, I’m glad this isn’t my boat, because we would have been a lot wetter! The trip and time were fantastic. Thanks!”
“The food situation was great. The locations where we spent the night at anchor were exceptionally beautiful. Being isolated for a week with nothing but a few good people, a book, and stunning views for 24 hours a day was just amazing! Thanks again.”
